Federal Names

Federal names

[Editor's note: this page is somewhat out of date.]

It seems like some federal government departments change their name every 30 seconds. Treasury Board of Canada, Secretariat, however, maintains a list of the most recent names and abbreviations on its Web site (www.info.tbs-sct.gc.ca/SIGS/html/TB_FIP/ text/files/TLE3.e.html ).

What often trips up writers and editors is the difference between a department's legal name and its applied name. The legal name is used only in legal documents, such as legislation. Just about everything the average writer or editor will come across will use the applied name instead. Here are a few of the more difficult applied names for selected departments and agencies, along with their abbreviations (where applicable).

· Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC)

· Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)

· Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC)
